Time to Catch Up

Wow...it's been nearly a year since I've posted anything on here. Sorry to be such a bum!!! Well, let's play catch-up really quick. Back in February, the Navy moved us from Everett, WA to Great Lakes, IL. During our transition, the kids flew down to TX for a visit while Josh and I made the drive from WA to TX by way of Vegas. Vegas served many purposes: anniversary trip, Christmas/New Years present to each other and just time for us. It was Josh's first time in Vegas, so we did a show, did just a little bit of gambling, took advantage of the gym and had some good food, courtesy of the Hilton (it's nice being a diamond member!). From there, we spent a few weeks in TX and then made the final transition to what would become our new home/duty station for the next few years. We moved into a beautiful house in an awesome neighborhood with lots of kids and great neighbors! Josh began his schooling to become an RDC (Recruit Drill Commander aka...boot camp instructor) in March and graduated from that in June (for which his mom came for a visit to take part in that graduation). He graduated having acquired the honor of demonstrating the most military baring in his class (only one of these certificates/statuses are given in a class). I was/am so proud of him!!! The graduation was awesome. Landin and Ashlynn both got to participate in pinning on his new decorations to his uniform which help distinguish him as an official RDC. He started "pushing" his first division that same day!!! After nearly 9 long weeks and even LONGER hours for him, Division 940 (consisting of 60+ new sailors) graduated on August 20, 2010. My mom, sister and myself attended the graduation for which the guest speaker was the real Antwonne Fisher. It was a smaller graduating group with only 5 divisions graduating, but Josh did his thing, standing in front of a ceremony hall full of new sailors and proud family attendees. He got a few weeks of a break and then picked up his second division only a few weeks ago. While he has been pulling 18hr days, I have been settling into life in a new city as a stay-at-home mom. Landin and Ashlynn have made new friends with neighborhood kids, and have kept me on my toes every step of the way! I have also started watching Nicholas (little boy from across the street) while Jenny and Erron (mom and dad) are at work. He is a fun and energetic kid with a contagious smile! He and Landin have their issues occasionally, but it's nice to have someone else for Landin to play with during the day while other kids are at school/daycare. Landin has started Pre-K through the park district here in the city and he's loving being back at school. He attends 3 days a week for a few hours at a time. He has made a whole lot of progress so far, even for only being there for a month! He is also playing soccer on the weekends with neighbor friend Alex in a youth league (it's absolutely the cutest thing ever!). This is his first exposure to playing sports, so we plan to try new sports til he finds the one that he really enjoys. Soccer so far is a good fit. He's learning... slowly, but he's learning. Point is that he's having fun. As far as Ashlynn goes, she enjoys riding in the wagon on our walks to and from school, drawing on the driveway with chalk, swinging and playing in the backyard and running away from me (her new favorite thing). She's growing up quick, coming up on her second birthday in just 2 more weeks. She fits easily into a size 4T, if that helps you to realize how big she is! Me... I'm trying to start school, keeping up with the house and kids, and trying my very best to be supportive of Josh and his schedule (the schedule is the part that I have trouble with sometimes). I do have to say, that I am quite content with how things are going in our life. I could not be more grateful for my husband who works hard, for kids that are loving (although sometimes defiant) and to be at home. We are coming up on winter and I'm quite nervous for the snow, but hopefully I will make it through without any hiccups. I'm looking forward to having a nice white Christmas though!!! I think that this will be a first white Christmas ever for me. We are looking forward to getting some quality time as a family after Josh's current division graduates in November. I think that is it, in a nut shell... That's the short version anyway. There are tons of other things, but those are the quick highlights.

On a side note: I love my husband, more with each day that passes. I love my children. They are my world, and I am grateful to be at home with them. I am grateful for everything that my life has become and I look forward to whatever the future holds for me. I will do my best to keep up with the blog from here. Sorry there's such a gap in time, but hopefully no more gaps.

Deception Pass and More

We took a trip to Whidbey Island and ventured a little off the beaten path. We drove over Deception Pass and it's gorgeous bridge and took a small hike to a beach to have lunch. Landin did his best to be a boy and threw rocks into the ocean the whole time. Then we took a hike and found a cool tree that stuck out over the trail. It was a great day with beautiful scenery!

Children's Museum

We went to the Children's Museum in Everett for a fun afternoon and had a blast! Ashlynn got to play on a huge firetruck, Landin got to build with blocks, they both got to play on a bus and be the driver, as well as a pilot for the airplane. Then of course, their favorite was the water. I don't know what it is with kids and water, but our two munchkins can't get enough! They had a blast and it was well worth the trip!

Lights of Christmas - Warm Beach

Josh found out about a place near where we live that is an entire community that decorates with thousands of lights. They have a train that takes you around, a talking Christmas tree (Bruce the Spruce), a toy workshop where the kids can make ornaments and toys themselves, kettlecorn and roasted almonds, carrollers and lots of other fun stuff. It was a bit chilly, but it was completely worth it!

Ashlynn's New Bling

We finally did it. We pierced Ashlynn's ears! She did quite well actually. It took her about 10 seconds after the first one to figure out what happened and started crying. Josh and I had to hold her down for the second one, but after it was done they lady gave her a sucker and she was fine. Thank goodness also for Tylenol. We gave it to her before we went to have it done, I'm sure it helped a lot! Her ears are healing well, and she's super cute with her new "bling!"

It's Christmas!!!

Well, we weren't fortunate enough to have snow, but we were fortunate enough to have Mimi (Josh's mom) come into town, surprise the kids and spend the last two holidays of 2009 with us. She flew up from Dallas the afternoon of Christmas Eve and Landin was SO excited to see her. We tricked him by saying that Daddy had forgotten a bag at the airport and we had to go get it. His reply was, "Daddy, you're always forgetting stuff!" Hilarious! So we get to the airport, while I'm on the phone with Mimi asking if "the bag" was ready for pick up. When "the bag" was ready, she snuck up to the truck and opened the door and Landin just started beaming! Ashlynn was a little confused at first, but once she heard Mimi's voice, she knew just who it was and grinned from ear to ear. We got home and Landin was so excited to show Mimi his presents. We tried our best to call it an early night so that we could finish up with Santa stuff. Landin woke up early the next morning, which of course meant that no one else could be asleep, so we all got up and headed for the tree. Wouldn't you know...Santa left Landin a Spiderman fishing pole and Ashlynn got a pink rocking horse that talks. And that's where the mess began. The kids took turns opening presents. Landin of course helped Ashlynn understand what she was supposed to do. It was great. They both got spoiled and the room was filled with all new toys. The rest of the day was spent cooking our big Christmas dinner and playing with new toys and game. It was a perfect Christmas, even if we didn't have the snow!

A Challenging Weekend

So, Landin decided to test the boundaries this weekend. The first boundary, he learned his lesson from. On Friday night, he came out to me while I was making dinner and said that he had swallowed some money and that it hurt. I was a little thrown off by it, because I thought we had gotten past that whole scenario with him. I would have expected it from Ashlynn, but not him. So I called the nurses line on the base and asked them what they suggested, which lead us to the ER. The ER took an X-ray and then determined that he needed to go to Children's Hospital in Seattle, where there were specialists for this situation. So Josh took Landin down there, and I took Ashlynn home. Landin ended up being admitted because the specialist had already gone home for the evening. The next morning, Ashlynn and I woke up extra early to go down to the hospital because the procedure to remove the money had been scheduled for 8am. So we got to the hospital, where Daddy and Landin had only had a few hours sleep, and we waited for the procedure. Landin was sedated, and the money got removed safely. Unfortunately, that whole experience was all for a penny. Too bad it wasn't a quarter!!!

On the next day, it was just after naps so that everyone could catch up, I started to smell something funny. I went into the kids' room, and what do I find? Landin is POURING powder on Ashlynn. I was fuming at first...until Ashlynn turned around and I saw what she looked like. I started cracking up. I couldn't help it. I was trying to scold Landin, but I just couldn't help but laugh at the whole situation. Could you have helped it after seeing this face?

Busy Busy Day

On the same day that we went and cut down our Christmas Tree, we also went and visited Santa. So cute! It's the same cute little Santa from 2 years ago when it was Landin's first Santa picture. Ashlynn did really well until the end, then she started to cry.

After visiting with Santa, we went to Chuck E Cheese for some dinner and fun. Landin had a blast playing with Daddy, and Ashlynn loved just climbinb up the stairs to the little kiddo area.

It didn't take too long after getting home for Ashlynn to fall asleep, but before we knew it, Landin had also fallen asleep, cuddled up with Daddy. So cute...

Cutting Our Tree

We took a drive up to the base in Jim Creek to cut down, for the first time, our Christmas Tree. It took us a while to find the right one. We were cold and starting to get wet from climbing through the trees and bushes. But finally, we did find it, the perfect tree, and it looks great here at our house!!!

While we were in Port Angeles, we took a drive up to the top of one of the mountains to get a look at some real snow and let the kids play. It was a blast!!! Landin was SOAKING wet by the end of it because he wanted to roll around in the snow.

Daddy's New Toy...

A few years ago, I made a promise to Josh that he could get a different sports car, if he sold his '99 Camaro SS (which he LOVED). Up until now, it just hadn't worked out to fulfill that promise. During this deployment, we were doing our homework on fulfilling that promise, and Josh changed his mind from another sports car to a motorcycle. So, surprise....here you go Baby!!!

Halloween Adventures

Our Halloween was awesome! We started out at the church carnival and played a bunch of fun games and then came back to Grandma's for the traditional Trick or Treating. Landin was Optimus Prime from Transformers and Ashlynn was a Lady/Love bug (can't quite make up my mind which one it is). They both looked adorable! Landin was so excited to go and get candy and Ashlynn of course could care less. She camped out in the stroller and was passed out by the time we got to house number 5 (it had been a very long day for her) lollipop in hand. Landin got a ton of sweets and made a few people laugh. He would tell us to not come to the door with him, for us to "stay here... I'm going to do it by myself". Mr Independent!!! The first of the best laughs, was at a house that had several older kids in the front yard wearing masks and trying to scare the older children. Freddie Kruger came up to Landin trying to scare him to which Landin reacted saying "Stop scaring me right now or I'm going to spank you!". It was hilarious! The second of the good laughs, was when he went to a door, collected his candy and the gentleman told him to not get a tummy ache from all the candy. Landin comes back to us waiting on the sidewalk holding his tummy saying "I have a tummy ache and it's driving me nuts"!!! So funny! It was a good night!

Pumpkin Patch

We took the kids to a pumpkin patch to find a pumpkin and had a blast! Landin loved the bounce houses and riding the pony and Ashlynn just loved being held by Daddy. We couldn't do much other than that because it was so muddy, but it was still a fun time and we got a great pumpkin (too bad we didn't' carve it)!!!

Ashlynn's Walking...and Other Progress

So she is a little behind Landin's milestone of walking, but that's okay because she waited until daddy came home to show her new talent! She had been attempting to make the steps, but wasn't quite confident enough and I didn't want to push her. Sure enough, the day after Josh got home, she starts walking!!! She is almost a pro now... still a few tumbles and a little shakiness every now and then (and even a black eye from a failed attempt), but she's doing it! Such a big girl... I can't believe it, but I am so happy that she waited for Josh to come home!

Also, she got her first hair cut! No longer bangs hanging in the face, she is now a super cute little girl!!!

Daddy is Finally Home

Josh left Texas on January 11, 2009 to leave for schooling and training in preparation for this deployment. The kids, Mimi (Josh's mom) and myself flew out to see him for a weekend in March in which he left the day we did. So after leaving home, and being away for the better part of the year, we are happy to say that DADDY IS BACK HOME!!! Josh returned home on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, sooner than what was originally expected, but a VERY welcome early homecoming!!! He flew from his location overseas to Washington DC where he was supposed to then fly to San Diego then Denver then Dallas. Thankfully, he found a ticket agent that was willing to help him get home sooner, so he was able to fly straight from DC to Dallas. The kids and I tied yellow ribbons in the front yard, and hung the banner that we had made a few days before reading "Welcome Home Daddy". We even wrote on "the big truck" that same phrase. It was a frantic morning...very very hectic, but we all got ready and went to pick him up at the airport. Landin was so excited for him to come home and Ashlynn hesitated only for a few minutes and then was perfectly content in Josh's arms. It was an awesome and exciting day. The countdown is over, thank goodness, and Josh is home for a good long while now!!

Ashlynn's Birthday - The Big 1!!!!

Yesterday was Ashlynn's first birthday, and we did our best to make it special despite keeping it low key until Daddy comes home. The day didn't exactly start the way that a birthday should, because we went to the doctor for her 12-month wellness check and got some shots...but she was okay as soon as she got her bottle. She checked out at 30inches and 25.10lbs. She is still solidly holding her spot in the 90% for height and weight. She is cruising easily along furniture and she's trying to build up the confidence to take a step on her own, but she's not quite there yet. I'm hoping she holds off until Daddy comes home. So we saw the doctor, had a short nap in the car and then the fun began...a few hours later anyway. We got a delivery of beautiful flowers from Daddy (they are absolutely gorgeous!). We had balloons for decorations, hotdogs, mac & cheese, olives and tomatoes for dinner (kid finger foods) and then came the cupcake. We sang, with Daddy on Skype, and bubby (Landin) helped blow out the candle...then came the true fun. The cupcake became a smash cake. It as fun watching her, and I'm so glad that Josh got to see it as well. After she had her fun with the cupcake, she got a bath (equipped with Dawn dish soap!!!), and then we got to open presents. Landin was so funny because he just wanted to open the presents, and that's really what ended up happening because Ashlynn was so tired...she wasn't so much into the ripping of the paper. Ashlynn got some very fun presents, perfect for the stages that are to come.

We can't believe that she's 1 already. She is such a VERY big girl and we can't wait to see what the future holds for her. Happy Birthday little girl...Mommy, Daddy and Bubby love you very much.

Parks and Fun

We've been hitting up some parks around here and have been taking some great pictures. Landin loves the park and Ashlynn likes to be in the sun. There's a park attached to the elementary school a few blocks away that we walk to that's really fun and has a double slide for both the kids. Then there's another park that is a little further, but it's a nice wagon ride away. That park has ducks that we go and feed. Unfortunately I haven't taken pictures of the feedings, but it's quite entertaining watching Landin let the ducks eat from his fingers, and Ashlynn just watches and squeals in amazement.

Ringling Bros Circus

So one thing that I haven't posted pictures of that we've done is the circus. I've just been lame and haven't downloaded the pictures. Auntie and I took Landin to the circus, along with our friend Kaisa and her son Colten. We took the train to Dallas, down to the American Airline Center. Landin LOVED the train! It was so funny how excited he was for us to get on a train. When we got there, we had to wait for a little bit for it to open. But finally, when it did open we went down to the floor to walk around the circles and see the different clowns and such. Landin liked watching the clowns and the elephant painting. When it was time for us to go take our seats, we went and bought fun souvenirs for the kids and went to sit. The show was FABULOUS!!! It's the best circus show that I've ever seen and it really did grab the kids' attention. The songs were fun, the clowns were hilarious and the animals were amazing! It was a way awesome trip!!!

Headed In The Right Direction!!!

Ashlynn is growing into such a big girl! We're coming up on 11 months now, and she's been crawling, pulling up and cruising for nearly 2 months. Next...her first step. While, there is still one small accomplishment that needs to happen first...standing up without holding on. Since she started pulling up and standing while holding on, she tends to stand on her tippy-toes. So that's probably hindered her standing on her own a little bit, but today she finally did it. She's been showing signs of this next step for about a week, but today was the actual standing! She stood up holding onto her toy box, grabbed a toy and then decided it would be funner to shake the toy with both hands, so she let go! It's so cute! I can't believe she's so big!!!

Daddy's Big Truck

So, we bought another car...only this time, it's a TRUCK!!! We no longer have the little red skittle, as it went for better use elsewhere, so Josh was going to be without a vehicle when he came home. So, we (actually Josh) did the homework and decided that a truck would be our best move. Originally, we were just going to get an extended cab normal truck. Then it went to a 4x4. Final result...'04 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.9L cummins diesel dually. HOLY BIG TRUCK!!! This thing is a monster!!! I've been telling Landin that we were going to get daddy a big truck and he kept getting so excited...now it's finally here. Baby, I hope you love it. It's a whole lotta truck to love!!!

Sea World San Antonio

This is a first for both Landin and Ashlynn. On our vacation, we made a stop at Sea World and make the most of the day. First stop, seeing the Beluga whales. We had an inside connection that allowed us to be able to go back to the training tanks and get up close and personal with the whales. It was awesome. We were able to touch them and they gave us a kiss. It was awesome! Next, we went to feed the dolphins. Ashlynn tried to get in the water with them, which was quite hilarious, but Landin had a blast feeding the dolphins. He was sort of afraid to feed them, that they might bite, so he kept just dropping the fish in the water, but it was great nonetheless. After that, we went on a mini rollercoaster and loved it! Then...the best part. We went and did the "Dine With Shamu" event. It was the best. We had a great lunch and were just two feet away from the whales! We got to see three whales, right there next to us. The trainers had them do some tricks for us and we learned some things about them. Landin was absolutely amazed at the whales. We went to the Shamu show afterwards and sat upwards enough that we thought we'd be a little safer than most, but we were surely mistaken. Landin and Auntie got SOAKED!!! I got the back half of me soaked as I had my back turned so that I could cover Ashlynn. She got a little wet, but she did okay with it. The ice cold water was certainly welcome though, considering it was 103 degrees (not including the heat index)!!! Afterwards, it was off to see the otters, seals and sea lions...quite entertaining. We made our last stop at the beluga and dolphin show. It was an awesome day, and so worth the heat and sweat!!!

Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch

We decided we needed a "vacay" (that's Grandma talk for vacation)!! We made reservations for the Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch down in San Antonio for the weekend and planned a day at Sea World as well. The Hyatt was gorgeous and so much fun. They had an indoor/outdoor pool, a lazy river and a sandy beach. The kids had a blast, swimming and digging. Landin LOVED the pool and of course the sand! I think Ashlynn was most impressed with the sand, considering that she kept trying to eat it! Landin got to play basketball in the pool and play with the giant water cannon, while Ashlynn just hung out in her floatie (thanks Karen)!! It was an awesome experience!

Little Billy Goat

Ashlynn recently found a stash of mail and turned it into a new floor display! Papers were scattered everywhere, and of course, then came the billy goat. The flyers then became the new chew toy! It was pretty entertaining. Especially when she tried to crawl away and she would slip on the papers or when the paper would stick to her hands and she's have a hard time getting them off. It was so stinkin hilarious!!!

Monkey In A Tree

These are the first signs of things to come!! Landin is being a true boy these days. Playing in dirt, picking up bugs and now climbing trees. So fun!!!

9-Months Old!!!

Went to the doctor this morning for Ashlynn's 9-month wellness check. All is well, no bad news. She's 23.3lbs and 29.5 inches long. That puts her in the 95% for height and weight. The doctor told me that her height is equal to that of a 13-month old child. Who'd have thought that we'd have TWO jolly-green giants (can you sense the sarcasm?)!!!! I tried looking at Landin's height for 9-month, but I can't find his record at the moment, but I did find his 12-month. He was 30.5 inches at 12 months...so she's definitely going to pass him up on height. Anyway, she got one shot (Hep B) and she did pretty well considering that she had her bottle, so it really didn't even phase her. I asked the doctor about her tongue-tie and whether it was a good idea to get it clipped now or to find out whether it was going to present as an issue when she starts trying to talk, she suggested to wait and see if it's an issue. Otherwise, all is well. She's healthy, on the right track as far as development (except her sleeping habits of course...still a MAJOR ISSUE), and she's eating well. Couldn't ask for much more. That's all to report. Tomorrow is our appointment at Scottish Rite to see an orthopedic about her foot (she was born with her right foot turned outward and it's potentially still a problem, especially now that she's about to start walking, so this appointment is just to be on the safe side and see if there is a problem or not and what can be done to correct it if necessary). I'll give updates on that when we find out more.

I'm Spiderman...No I'm Optimus Prime...No Ironman

Landin is starting to use his pretending skills. He's watched a few Spiderman movies, and he now runs around the house, throwing his arms out pretending to throw a spider web. It's so funny to watch him do this. At first, I wasn't quite sure what he was doing, but now it's making sense. Before his Spiderman phase, it was Optimus Prime and BumbleBee from Transformers. He loves BumbleBee and wants to be like him. Although that pretending could get interesting! Before that...it was Ironman. He was Ironman for last Halloween, so he has the costume still (amazingly it still fits at the rate that he's growing). He puts on the costume and the mask and goes around the house trying to scare everyone. So funny...these are definitely things that I will be torturing him with when he gets married!!!

So stinkin cute...

With technology developing at an amazing rate, there is a program called Skype that Josh and I use to talk on a daily basis, so long as schedule permits. It is so nice, because we can do a video call so he can hear and see us and visa versa. So now, any time that Ashlynn sees me talking to Josh, she automatically starts saying "Da Da Da". It's so cute and so funny. She knows what I'm doing, she recognizes his picture and his voice and she's putting the word with the person.

It's just too cute!

Doctor says..."Scalpel Please"

I am in the midst of dealing with a long presenting issue that looks like it is finally going to be resolved. Shortly after Landin was born, I developed a problem, that I've been basically ignoring for 3.5 years, and now it's to the point where I need to have it dealt with. I went to the doctor this week, and he agrees that it needs to be treated, so now it's up to the insurance to give their answer. With any luck, this issue will be resolved within the next month or so. I am so excited!!! I can't wait to have this done and over with. Please keep me in your prayers that it will be handled and all will go well.

Ashlynn is Crawling!!!

So, Ashlynn started crawling just the other day. It was so cute...we were playing on the floor, and she just started doing it. It had finally clicked what process she should follow in order to get from point "A" to "B". Of course then, I wouldn't let her stop...she had to keep going. So then, I started talking to Josh (using the computer program Skype...thank goodness for it!) and so he was able to see it. Then, he became the target for her to crawl to. Here's some video...it's so cute!!!

EXW Ceremony

I just received pictures of Josh's pin ceremony for his EXW. For those of you who need an explanation of what this pin is exactly, this is what I've been able to find in "Lamen's" terms: "The qualification was developed to provide a chance for enlisted sailors in the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command community (naval personnel serving in a maritime security or maritime combat related role) to earn a warfare qualification. Landin went and spent the night at Mrs. Jen's house (Landin's nanny from WA who got stationed in TX also) and with Hailey and Owen. He loves going over to her house and playing with the kids. He of course had a blast playing, and Jen took some pictures for me. Landin had his first trampoline experience and went to Lake Worth as well. So fun!!!

So I got a phone call just a few days ago from Josh's chief overseas. In my previous post I mentioned that Josh has been working on his EXW pin, which is an achievement pin for the type of warfare that his command falls under. Well, this chief was calling me to let me know that Josh had just received his pin!! He got this pin which means that he will get to count it on his future records which will help his career. His chances for making chief when the time comes have been helped by receiving this pin.

Josh Update

First, I want to start off by saying thank you to all of you who keep Josh in your prayers.

Josh is doing very well. Tired, but he's doing well. He is in the midst of studying for his next achievement pin, referred to as EXW. He has one achievement pin already from when he was stationed on the ship, but that is a different "segment" of the Navy, so now he gets to try for this new pin. It's basically a series of tests and then a verbal test given by a board of chiefs and officers from his command. He has taken the written tests and passed with no problems. He has taken his practice verbal boards and did very well with those as well. Now, he's just waiting for the real board and I am certain he will do really well. As now an E6, he is taking on more responsibilities which are stressful but he's dealing with it. We are counting down the days to what we think will be his homecoming. It's not a definite date yet, but we think we know the month...so we're counting down to that. We are ready to have him home.

Landin @ School

Landin has been attending Montessori school for a little over a month now and it's so amazing how much he's progressed in such a little time. Several times now, I've caught him organizing, stacking and categorizing things. Right now, he's practicing his "practical life" skills, which for Montessori means..."children learn how to do things such as: pouring and scooping, using kitchen utensils, washing dishes, polishing objects, scrubbing tables, and cleaning-up. They also learn how to dress themselves, tie their shoes, wash their hands, and other self-care practices." He's doing such a good job at it. He wants to help wash dishes with every chance that he gets and he thoroughly enjoys washing his hands (I think that's more because he likes to play in the water though). Just tonight, he brought out his crayons that are shaped like little traffic cones so they can be stacked together, but then they can also be stuck on your finger to draw, he took them all out of his pencil box and lined them all up before he started to color. The other day, I found Ashlynn's stacking rings lined up like a train on the floor and every once in a while I find various other things in some sort of order that I know was his doing. He's so stinkin smart it's amazing! I can't believe that he is learning so much so quickly. The next step in Montessori is for him to start learning colors, letters and shapes. While the "Montessori method" is to teach him at his pace and not force him into learning something cause that only makes it take longer, I am working with him as often as possible to teach him those things. So when I hand him something for a snack or to play with or I point to an object while driving or playing, the question that normally follows is "What color is that?". For the most part, he can get it right. Yellow and orange he's got down with no problem, he understands black and brown. Red, blue and green are still his trouble areas. Shapes...we've still got a little ways to go. But the point is, it's all about waiting for him to show his interest in those things and then that's when you start teaching. Another thing he's participating in is a computer class at school. Every monday, for about 30 minutes, he takes a computer class. An organization comes in to the school, brings laptops and teaches the kids the components of the computer, how to use them correctly, and then they play some age-appropriate learning games. He's loving that class, and that makes me happy. He also, starting tomorrow, is going to take a science class. It's a week long class, and he'll be doing it after his school hours, but I am so looking forward to hearing his stories about what he's going to learn from it. I'll share, as soon as I get the details from him!

I am pleased to announce, that Ashlynn has her first tooth! She has a second tooth coming in just behind it but it hasn't broken the skin just yet. It's so awesome!!! She's sticking her tongue out more cause now it feels different, and since she is tongue-tied, she has a little lizard looking tongue! So cute!!!

Reason To Celebrate!!!

Back in April, Josh took the E6 advancement exam. This means that he was hoping to basically be given a "promotion" from E5 to E6 by way of taking the test, passing and then be advanced. There are several stipulations to advancing, even after passing the test, but I don't know what all they are. Anyway, we got the results about two weeks ago, where we learned that he had not advanced. It was pretty disappointing, considering that this was now Josh's 3rd time taking the test, passing it but not having advanced. I received an email containing the following quote, which I then passed onto Josh...

"The Lord puts challenges in your path to mold your character. For your own personal growth He will often let you struggle with a matter for a while, even when you are pleading for help. But as you follow true principles, He will finally see you through. He intends that when you have reached your extremity, you will turn to Him for comfort, peace, and assistance. He will send these through the quiet prompting of the Spirit. He will give reassurance and guidance that are essential to correct decisions in your life. "You are learning powerful, eternal lessons. Be sure you understand them. The Lord does not abandon your urgent pleas, nor is He ever, for even a moment, unmindful of your anguish and heartache. He hears every supplication. He invariable answers according to spiritual law. Understanding that law will help you appreciate how the Lord answers your prayer. His silence and seeming absence at times are a powerful means of expanding your vision and understanding as you continue in faith to do your best."

Well, just as this quote identifies the promise that the Lord will see you through your challenge, even after you may think He is ignoring you...we were able to see that very promise take place! While Josh struggled to understand why after all of his efforts toward making E6 and it not happening...the promise was fulfilled. The initial results of the exam came out saying that he had not advanced. Turns out, he got a call today letting him know that there was a message sent to a chief in his command notifying everyone that there was a clerical error and that Josh had passed AND advanced. This is such good news, and an answer to our prayers. We are so excited!!! The only down side to this news is it's timing, since I won't be able to be present at the ceremony that takes place when he gets "pinned" with his new rank. I'm very bummed about that, but this is still so amazing and exciting. To see this new step finally taking place, and also seeing a prayer answered in our lives.

Congratulations Baby! You deserve it for all of your hard work and dedication!!! I love you!!!

Another Milestone

Ashlynn has now reached another milestone. I've been anxious for this one cause I think that she's a little behind the "average" kid when it comes to this, but she got there nonetheless. She finally rolled over, from her back to her tummy. The best part, Josh was able to watch her do it through the webcam!! I'm so excited! Now, the next step will be getting onto her hands and knees on her own and then....CRAWLING!!! Holy cow, I can't believe it!

When I Grow Up...

I picked Landin up from school today and he was in the best mood, it was so nice. On our way getting packed back into the car, Landin noticed a blimp in the sky (from the Byron Nelson being held near his school). He was curious what it was, how it worked and who got to drive it. I told him that it's kind of like a balloon cause it floats, but it's like an airplane cause it can fly too. That's when he asked who can drive it. I told him that a pilot "drives" it. I then had to explain to him what a pilot was, and that a pilot doesn't just fly blimps, but planes and helicopters too. To become a pilot, you have to go to lots of school and do really well at it and learn all that you can. He then proceeded to tell me, that he wants to be a pilot so that he can fly airplanes like what "nonny" (that's what he calls me sometimes) used to build. He then changed his mind and said that he wanted to fly helicopters instead. I reminded him that he would have to learn lots at school and do his very best to which he replied that he would.

I think we're on to something here!!!

So the other day I was making cakes for an order that my sister received (cause she's affectionately known as "The Cake Lady" where ever she goes) and Landin decided that he wanted to help. Well, since the cakes were for an order, I didn't want a little helper leaving egg shells in the mix, so I decided to give him his own little plate of flour that he could scoop into a bowl and just mess around with. Well, the "mess" part I certainly got right! He had the flour from head to toe and EVERYWHERE on the counter and floor where he was working. It was so cute and so funny that the mess was the best part of my day!!!

Montessori, Here We Come

Landin just finished his first week of Montessori school and he did great. He's a little timid and fussy when I first drop him off in the morning, not wanting to detach from my leg, but once he's distracted he does well. His teacher is great with him and she says that he's doing very well. I'm excited to see what all he learns over the next few months that he attends...I'll keep you posted!

This past week brought some amazing weather here to TX, so we took advantage of it completely. Coming from Seattle, where you only get a few weeks worth of non-rainy, warm weather...it was a nice change. We walked to a nearby park to feed the ducks and play. Landin rode his three-wheeler the whole way and Ashlynn tagged along in the stroller. It was about a 1 1/2 mile walk one way and Landin rode his bike the entire way there and back, while Ashlynn slept. It was lots of fun!!!

So, Landin said the funniest thing the other day...it made me laugh so hard. So my sister and I were on our way home from a very patience testing run to Walmart so my nerves were frazzled. Landin had been very much a 3-year old and all that that intales. When we got into the car, Landin burped...now Josh and I have been trying very hard to make sure that Landin has manners. That he says "Please" and "Thank you", etc. Well, when he burped, I said "Landin, what do you say?" to which he replied, "I don't know." Then I said to him "Landin, where are your manners?" ... "IN MY MOUTH!". My sister and I couldn't help but laugh. That line totally would have qualified him for the Bill Cosby show "Kids say the darndest things".

6 Months and Still Growing...

I cannot believe that Ashlynn is 6 months old now. Wow...I can't even begin to account for where the time has gone. We had her well-baby checkup today and got nothing but good news. She's 26.5inches long (so we've grown an inch since her 4 month checkup) and 20.4lbs (a gain of 2 pounds). She now is in the 75% for her height and 95% for weight. She is sitting up unassisted, eating stage 2 foods and is now cruising in a new convertible car seat. Her favorite new noise is "da" so she says it over and over and it's so stinkin cute! Josh has been able to listen to it over the computer and I know it just makes him melt! She's squealing and laughing, although Landin is still the only one that can really make her laugh which is just adorable. Otherwise, she's still growing. No sign of any teeth yet, but they're coming cause the drool faucet is officially turned on. She had her first pickle the other day and she enjoyed it thoroughly. She's also had a cheetoh which she also enjoyed. This picture is of her new favorite toy...a piece of ribbon (go figure, you spend good money on cute toys and the item that you didn't even intend on becoming a toy is the most fun).

Landin had a problem when he was an infant with not "being regular" and since starting Ashlynn on baby foods we've run into that same problem a time or two. I learned quickly with Landin, that prunes help, but of course he only would eat prunes when he was really little and couldn't tell me no! So, with Ashlynn, I'm doing the same thing. Prunes have now become a staple in her diet, and this most recent encounter was pretty hilarious!

Huntin' Eggs

Wow...I've never seen a kid get so excited over finding something. It was the most adorable thing that I've seen Landin do in a long time. He just got so excited...

So, in order to hide the eggs, we had to distract Landin, so Uncle Chris took him for a drive while the rest of us hid the eggs. We made it simple, just out on the patio (cause we had just had some rain so we didn't want to attempt to track through the mud). We hid the eggs in the flower beds, on the steps, on his outdoor toys, on the grill. When Uncle Chris brought him back, he didn't even make it back into the house before finding an egg...then it all kept on going. I hurried to give him his basket, then Mimi took it from there. She gave him cute little hints on where to find the rest. They just walked around and he found every one of the eggs within 5 minutes! Then came the fun part...opening the eggs and eating the candy. I put a limit on the candy eating of course, especially after our good report from the dentist! So...it was an exciting hunt...very productive, entertaining and memorable.

So, this year was the first year that we dyed Easter eggs. Landin had lots of fun. He just got so excited and wanted to keep putting eggs in the buckets before the first ones had even finished. Mimi helped, so there was a little control over the situation, but not much. We did about two dozen eggs, one for each member of our little family and then one for all the nicknames..."Landin Cakes", "Puffy Cakes", "Little Man", "Poodle"...the list is endless! Anyway, it was a lot of fun and we got some good results.

Yay Me...Progress!

Sorry, I have to gloat for a minute cause I'm so proud of myself! So, since being back at home in TX and not working, I was so afraid of putting on the pounds. But one of my goals while being here while Josh is away, is to lose weight. I have to say, that I've officially started walking that path! While it's nothing major...it's still a start! I've lost 6 pounds (with still an unmentionable amount to lose) and two inches in my waist. I am so happy! I have a goal that I'm striving to reach so hopefully I will make it there. Six down and XX more to go!!! Yay me!

Josh Update

Josh is doing well considering the circumstances of being away from family and friends. He's working hard and trying to stay caught up on his sleep. He still can't give out any information on his location, the date of his return or what exactly his job entails over there, but he assures me that he's safe. I just finished sending off some boxes that contained (at his request) Wheat Thins, Raisin Bran, PB&J, Nutrigrain Bars and some shorts (as the temp is consistently well above 100). Still no date for his return, but we are doing our best to count the days as they go by until he comes back home. We will be choosing our new military orders soon, so we're anxious to learn where we will be going in the future. Please continue to keep Josh in your thoughts and prayers that he remains safe as he continues to serve the people and his country proudly and without question.

Duck's Day Out

The past few days, Uncle Chris has been taking Landin to the park in an effort to help me and let Landin burn off some of his tremendous toddler energy. The first time that they went, they fed the ducks and Landin made a few ducky friends that chased him. Since then, when they go to the park, they continue to feed the ducks and one of the same ducks chase him constantly! I guess he's just not feeding them fast enough. The most recent visit to the park, Landin had a bit of an accident where he lost his footing and slipped into the water with the ducks and all other pond creatures (a bit of a scary thought of what could be lurking in the water...) and managed to get a little "owie" but survived and wasn't traumatized in the least. The Dentist Approves

So yesterday was Landin's first ever dental appointment. I must say that I was a little apprehensive about going cause I wasn't sure what kind of a report we were going to get, but everything turned out very well. The dentist commented that he wished that every kid came in with as clean of teeth as Landin's. NO CAVITIES!!! Landin did really well with everything. We had x-rays done and he didn't complain or move one bit. Then, he sat perfectly still for the dentist to look at his teeth. He did awesome! We'll see what happens again in 6 months!

Leaving...On a Jet Plane

It's official...Josh is now deployed. Not sure where he is at this point, however he will be gone for a while. It was a tearful goodbye when we parted yesterday, not only because we were coming home from our trip to see him in San Diego, but also because we were saying goodbye to him as he was getting ready to leave San Diego as well. Turns out, that he departed just a few minutes before our own flight took off. I've heard word from him that he is so far doing well, but very tired. He will be very busy over the next few weeks and expects it to be a steady pace throughout this entire deployment, but hopefully that will make the time pass quickly. Landin is so far doing well understanding that his daddy went away "to be a hero" and that's what we're leaving it as. Ashlynn will sadly feel as though Josh is a stranger when he comes home, but I'm sure she will warm back up to him quickly. We will be counting down the months as they go by. When I know more information I will certainly pass it along as I am allowed to. In the mean time, please keep Josh in your prayers that he builds his career while he's away, serves his country with dignity and integrity but returns home safely and quickly to his family.

San Diego Zoo

Our recent trip to San Diego to visit Josh was very fun filled and well worth every moment! We made a stop in at the zoo to see all the animals there. Landin had a blast seeing all of the animals, and getting his face painted, while Ashlynn was along for the ride, but enjoyed the sunshine.

Long Beach Aquarium

While on our trip to go see Josh in San Diego before his deployment, we took the chance to go and visit the Long Beach, CA Aquarium. It was awesome! Landin got to pet sting rays, sharks and look at some HUGE sea bass. It was awesome! We had a really good time, and Landin was just amazed at all the cool things to see.

Ashlynn's 4 Months and Growing...

The growing doesn't slow down and it certainly hasn't stopped. While I'm two weeks late making this post, I didn't want to miss the chance to report how she's doing. Ashlynn went to the doctor for her 4-month wellness check which came just shortly after fighting a cold and ear infection. The doctor said that she is doing very well, meeting all of the milestones that she should have reached at this point and making good time on her growing (that's a bit of an understatement). She is in the 97% for weight, 90% for height and right at average for her head growth. So, in translation...she's a big girl @ 18lbs 2oz, and 25in long!!! She's wearing 6-9month clothes even though she's only 4 months, and she's in a size 3 diaper and well on her way to size 4. I would love to be able to take advantage of the clearance winter clothes to stock up for next year, but at this growing rate...there's no telling what size she would be! Heck, she could be a 2T when she's 12 months old...we'll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure however, she is a carbon copy of Landin at this age. Looks, gestures, attitude...all of it is a Landin encore!

Horray for Potty Training

I have to announce, that Landin can now be called "potty trained"!!! He is wearing big boy underwear and doing so very well with them. It was a struggle at first, trying to transition from diapers to pullups, and now into underwear, but it is well worth it. I must say, that it's so cute to see him in Batman and Ironman underwear, as well as Lightning McQueen! He's excited to be able to wear them as well. So far, there haven't been any accidents, but we're prepared for them if they come. We're looking forward to being able to show Daddy the big boy underroos this coming week!!! I have to say that the lesson that I took away from all of this...PATIENCE!!! It's a stuggle, but it's so worth it!

Dylan's Birthday

Yesterday we had the chance to go and celebrate a birthday for the son of a good from of the family. Landin had a blast, and he looked so handsome!! He got to hit a pinata and make his own birthday hat...not to mention the birthday cake, ice cream and soda! That's always a plus for him!!! Ashlynn got to play with new toys, including an exersaucer (the baby toy that you sit in and the activities are all around you). She loved it! I got to visit with lots of friends that I hadn't seen in a while, which is always nice.

Josh's Training

Josh's days consist of about 18hours of training in a classroom, on the boats or in the field and it is a 6-day week. He's getting worn out and is ready for a break, which is much deserved for this weekend (President's Day weekend). He still can't tell me where he's going or when. I'm not sure if he even knows when he's coming back, but we're looking forward to be able to choose our new orders in the upcoming months. Who knows where we will be going next year with these new orders... Here are a few pictures of Josh during his field training... I'll keep you posted!

Our Adjustment

So, we're getting into a groove with being in Texas and living back at home with my mom. I am having very little luck finding a job so I'm enjoying my time at home with the kids. Josh is doing well with training and is currently still stateside. I am still in the dark of when or where he's going which is a little irritating, but it comes with being part of the military. His days are very long, so he's very worn out. The kids and I, as well as Leslie (mother-in-law) are planning to make a trip to see him early next month. I can't wait for the kids to see him!! Landin is missing his daddy so much. We're adjusting as best as we can. I'm looking to put Landin in a part-time preschool/daycare to keep him on track with learning and socializing. Otherwise, we're just enjoying being at home, but going crazy not having Josh here. More news to come...

My Sweet Ashlynn

My sweet little Ashlynn is 4 months old...where did the time go? She has grown so much even in the last month. Ashlynn is now smiling all the time, she's started having cereal in her bottles at night and cereal on a spoon in the mornings. She's also grasping for objects and holding onto them successfully. She's starting to giggle, but nothing major yet. One of the sad things though is that she came down with her first cold recently. Otherwise, she is doing well. We have her checkup tomorrow, however when I took her to the doctor for her cold, I learned that she is now 18lbs and 25 inches long. She's a growing little girl!!!

Sleepy Boy...Again

Ashlynn is now officially 3 Months old. She is smiling, cooing and growing for sure. She looks just like her daddy. I think in this picture we were catching her off guard and she was getting a little mad at all the pictures we were taking. We'll see just how much she's grown when we take her to the doctor's for her 4-Month well check in just a few more weeks.

We went and saw Santa...Landin was great, although the picture doesn't show it and Ashlynn slept through the whole thing. Oh well, it was great anyway.

On The Road Again...

It was a little scary at first, but we escaped Seattle just before the worst of the weather hit. I recently learned that there is nearly 2ft of snow...luckily when we left there was only about 6 inches. It was a long trip...46 hours to be exact, but it's over and we all made it to Texas safely. We're getting settled in and Landin is loving being able to play outside in the middle of winter. The high for today was 81. Yep....81 degrees!!! Go Texas! Anyhow, here is what we left behind in Seattle...it will be missed while we're away, but if things pan out like we expect them to, we'll be back in a year.

In case you couldn't tell, the middle picture is a tiny snowman that someone had built on the dividing wall of I-5 in Seattle...I guess someone got stuck and decided to make the most of their time!

Landin has had a habit of fighting sleep since he was an infant and that is still the case today. I posted earlier that Landin has gotten onto a really cooky schedule and so I've been trying to get him back onto a normal one. I was able to do it, for a day, but then we got off track again. Well, today I tried to put him down for a nap at a normal time and he wasn't ready. I tried again an hour later, still no luck. Then, he came into Ashlynn's room where I was and said he wanted to sit in the rocking chair and I agreed. He made it half-way up the chair and fell asleep...now why couldn't he have done that in his room? Oh well...it makes for a pretty adorable picture!

Sleepy Baby Boy

So, we are on a really odd schedule. Landin has started taking naps really late in the afternoon because we are up so late with Ashlynn. Well, today was an attempt to try and get him back onto a normal schedule, however it didn't work out the way I was hoping it would. I was trying to keep him up all day (even through his worst crabby moments) and let him go to bed at a normal decent time to get him back on a real schedule...this is how it turned out (not how I was hoping it would).

I walked into the other room to start making a bottle for little girl, and when I came back, this is what I found!

Yummy Breakfast

Landin is such a good helper, especially when it has something to do with cooking. He loves to help mix and stir. He has helped make cookies, muffins, and brownies at "school", and now he has helped me make blueberry pancakes. He did so good stirring...we'll see if he grows up to be a chef!

Girl Time

Finally, there's another girl in the house. Well, there's always been Cammie (the cat), but she doesn't count cause she just sits there. Now, finally, the numbers are even. Two boys and two girls. Hah...that's so cool!

Tummy Time

Ashlynn is growing so quickly. We just went to the doctor recently and learned that he is now 10lbs 5 oz, and 21" long. I wish she could stay little forever, but she just keeps growing. Tummy time is especially fun, when she just wiggles and makes cute noises.

Boy's Day

Landin loves his daddy! Josh is definitely Landin's hero. Landin walks in Josh's footsteps on every level (they evey look just the same). Mimics his every move. It's going to be very difficult for Landin to live for such a long period of time without his daddy while Josh is away on deployment.

4 Weeks Old and Growing!!!

I can't believe that Ashlynn is 4 weeks old already. I can't remember what it was like without her, it just feels like she's been here the whole time. We have all adjusted very well to having her here with us, especially Landin. I am actually quite surprised as to how well Landin has done. He's so helpful; wanting to hold her, feed her. He watches us give her a bath, if she's crying he runs to get the pacie or bottle. He's such a good big brother, and of course, she's the perfect little sister.

At the Playground

We went to the playground at "The Village" near downtown Seattle. Landin loved it! Since he's not in "school" anymore, he loved to be able to play with other kids around his age. It's so funny to see him interact with them and how quickly he can find friends.

Not Just Any "Road" Trip

While Grandma was in town, we decided to go on a ferry ride, Ashlynn's first. Landin loves the water. The both did so good! Ashlynn of course slept, while Landin was fascinated by the water, birds and noises of the ferry. It was a lot of fun!

Trick or Treat

Happy Halloween to our two little ones! Landin was "Ironman" and he was so proud. It took him a bit to warm up to going to people's doors and knocking, but he started to get the hang of it once he saw the candy coming! Ashlynn made her appearance as a little black cat but she only got a few pieces of candy since she was in the stroller the whole time, sleeping on the job! It was great though!

Big Brother

Landin finally got to meet his baby sister. He was so excited. He came into the hospital room and noticed Daddy holding something new. He walked over and we asked him, "Landin, who is that?" to which he replied "That's Ashlynn". He knew exactly who she was, we didn't have to explain a thing! He's such a good big brother. So gentle and already so protective!
